A family have spoken of the terrifying moments when they became trapped in their car as a pride of lions dragged an animal carcass under their vehicle.

Jade van Holdt and her family had been delighted to be able to see something that few people are lucky enough to witness in the wild, as lions chased and then brought down an impala in Kruger National Park. The pride then settled down to eat their kill and Mrs van Holdt and her family watched in amazement.

However, when a fight broke out between two lionesses about who should have the lions share of the kill. The animal carcass ended up being dragged under the car when a tug o war broke out over the antelope.

The antelope became stuck under the family vehicle, with the family screaming that they wanted to leave. They were unable to drive off with the antelope under a wheel and cubs having gone underneath the car to feed. Thankfully, it didn’t take long for the lions to eat their kill and they then moved off in search of a shady spot to rest.

The Kruger National Park is one of the most popular places for wildelife spotting in South Africa and is one of the last remaining strongholds of lions in the wild. Usually, while lionesses might make the kill, the stronger males end up eating first, before lionesses and finally the cubs. However, that hierarchy did not apply with this kill, as all members of the pride fought for their share. It is estimated that around 2,000 lions live in the national park. Around 950,000 people visit the park every year, hoping to catch a glimpse of some of the Big Five, although probably without wanting to get quite as close as the van Holdt family.
