Outgoing US president Barack Obama says that he has suffered racism from white Americans during his time in office.
Mr Obama, who is due to hand over the keys to the White House to Republican Donald Trump in the New Year, said that some white Americans viewed his time in office with negativity because of the colour of his skin.
Looking back at his time in office, he said: “I think there’s a reason why attitudes about my presidency among whites in Northern states are very different from whites in Southern states. Are there folks whose primary concern about me has been that I seem foreign, the other? Are those who champion the “birther” movement feeding off of bias? Absolutely.”
One of Mr Obama’s senior advisors, David Axelrod, said there was definitely a section of opposition which was down to his race. Mr Axelrod that that at least one powerful Republican had been disrespectful to Mr Obama because he is black.
Mr Trump is said to have brought up issues over Mr Obama’s birthplace again when he encouraged people to look into where the president was born. The new president said he had been told by someone he described as extremely credible that Mr Obama’s birth certificate was fake.
However, former reality star Mr Trump has taken back claims that Mr Obama was born in Kenya, saying that Mr Obama was definitely born in America. However, he did not go as far as saying sorry to Mr Obama. After calls for Mr Obama to publish his birth certificate, Mr Obama finally conceeded and did so five years ago, proving that his birthplace was actually Hawaii.
However, Mr Obama, who campaigned strong for Democrat Hillary Clinton, did say however that he did not mind being defined as America’s first black president.
